Here is Sabathia’s statement in its entirety:
“I love baseball and I love my teammates like brothers, and I am also fully aware that I am leaving at a time when we should all be coming together for one last push toward the World Series,” Sabathia’s statement said. “It hurts me deeply to do this now, but I owe it to myself and to my family to get myself right. I want to take control of my disease, and I want to be a better man, father and player.”
The Yankees pitcher praised the organization for being understanding and also said he looks forward to playing for New York next season.
This news comes about a month and a half after TMZ released a video of Sabathia almost getting into a fistfight after leaving a nightclub in Toronto. ;
The lefty had one of his worst seasons in 2015 with the Yankees going 6-10 with a 4.73 ERA.
New York will be playing Houston in the Wild Card game on Tuesday.
