Bill Cosby’s ‘Late Show With David Letterman’ Appearance Canceled

According to Newsday, Bill Cosby’s Nov. 19 appearance on “The Late Show With David Letterman” has been canceled. No reason was given for the schedule change, but Regis Philbin will replace Cosby on the broadcast. A representative for CBS declined to comment when contacted by The Huffington Post (the network does not publicly discuss its booking process). Cosby’s representatives did not return repeated requests for comment; this post will be updated if and when a response is received. This marks Cosby’s second canceled booking in the last two weeks, as he dropped out of “The Queen Latifah Show” on Oct. 30. That move came a week after stand-up comedian Hannibal Buress called…

Embracing Who You Are

For many years I’ve been blessed by my friendship with Pamela Ferrell, one of the country’s leading experts on natural Black hair. Pamela and her husband Taalib-Din Uqdah co-founded the Washington, D.C. hair salon Cornrows & Co. in 1980, pioneering the natural hair care movement with African-inspired braids and hairstyles. They point out that their philosophy and the natural product line they created for their styles long predated today’s green movement: Cornrows & Co. has always featured a chemical-free salon with plant-based products, focusing both on protecting each client’s health and using products that are locally made and safe for the earth. Today, using chemical-free products and embracing “natural beauty” have gained traction in many mainstream circles — yet both…

Blaming the Victim From a Position of Power

Co-authored with Felecia Commodore and Andrés Castro Samayoa In October 2014 the Obama administration released new rules pertaining to sexual assault on college and university campuses. These rules encourage more transparency in campus judicial processes, enhance survivors’ rights, and call for more educational programs pertaining to consent. These rules are greatly needed as protections for survivors of rape and as a way to mitigate sexual assault’s prevalence on college campuses. A month earlier, in September, Lincoln University President Robert Jennings stood in front of a convocation of young black women on campus, where he proceeded to detail his own perspectives on the ways in which men use women, the inextricable relationship between women’s attire and…

Diffusing Racial Dynamite

The conditions appear to have been long set in places like Ferguson, Missouri, where American citizens live together in a city that is made up of two worlds. The prevalence of social media and technology has conveniently allowed people to discuss the very sensitive topics of race, religion, gender and politics, 140 characters at a time. It seems that, although America has advanced into a developed society, the conditions that contribute to the country’s dilemma of racial disparity continue to threaten national peace and prosperity. One of the common core beliefs in America is the right to live in peace and to exist in communities without the physical threat of being harmed. “Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” as written in…

Tina Fey Summed Up Kim Kardashian’s Nude Photo Shoot 3 Years Before It Even Happened

No, Tina Fey isn’t clairvoyant, but she did hint at why so many of us can’t take our eyes off of Kim Kardashian’s recent nude photo shoot with Paper Magazine in her book Bossypants three years ago. As Twitter user Ryan Nelson pointed out on Nov. 13, Tina Fey briefly discussed Kim K’s booty in her best-selling memoir Bossypants and summed up why we’re all so enamored with it better than any blog, think piece or news article has in the last three days. If you’re reading this on a mobile device, here’s the full text: “I think the first real change in women’s …

Reflections From the First International Conference on Urban Education

As I was watching the ship roll in (think Otis Redding), I was curious as to why it was getting so close to the shore. After about a few minutes a very fit Black man jumped off the boat into the water, and then reached back into the boat to grab two oxygen tanks and toss them ashore. He then walked, in his wet suit, to the shore and retrieved two (I assume) full oxygen tanks and loaded them back onto the boat. The boat then proceeded to motor back out to the Sea. For those who have been to Jamaica or any other seaside local, this scene is common place. What stood…
