During President Obama’s historic visit to a U.S. mosque on Wednesday, he made a poignant statement on acceptance of Muslims.

The president delivered a speech at the Islamic Society of Baltimore, which marked his first trip to a U.S. mosque as president. While there, he addressed the topic of Islam in the country and offered uplifting words directed specifically at young Muslim-Americans, about on their place on American soil.

“If you’re ever wondering whether you fit in here, let me say it as clear as I can, as president of the United States: You fit in here, right here. You’re right where you belong — you’re part of America, too,” he said. “You are not Muslim or American. You are Muslim AND American.”

In addition to making statements about inclusion, the president further stressed the idea that staying loyal to both religion and country is possible. And while Muslims may encounter people who do not share this opinion, resorting to hateful beliefs is not the answer.

“Don’t grow cynical. Don’t respond to ignorance by embracing a worldview that suggests you must choose between your faith and your patriotism,” Obama said. “Don’t believe you have to choose between your best impulses and somehow embrace a worldview that pits us against each other — or even worse, glorifies violence.”

And while the president urged the crowd to “move the country forward” and enact positive change, he ultimately made it clear that Muslims have support in this country.

“As we go forward, I want every Muslim-American to know, you are not alone,” the president said. “Your fellow Americans stand with you.”
