Unlike the two Republican Presidential Debates previously aired, this debate was a professional forum where relevant questions were posed and respectful answers were stated. One of the biggest distinctions of the two debates was the blunt question on the Black Lives Matter movement: Do Black lives matter or do all lives matter?
This candid question, presented to the presidential hopefuls, is off the beat-and path of the questions posed in the two previous debates. In no other debate has the moderator asked a question forcing candidates to state their sanction or disdain from this domestic human rights campaign. Perhaps the most candid response was Senator Bernie Sanders, point black stating that “black lives matter.” Sanders’ answer provoked a amicable response among many black people on social media. The fact that this question was posed in a nationally televised debate for the highest office in the land points to the accomplishments of thousands of activists. While many were overjoyed that this question was asked, others were repelled and communicated their disdain.

Like supporters of the phrase ‘all lives matter,’ former Governor Mike Huckabee’s tweets inadvertently petition for colorblindness. Despite fervent attempts of black people to reclaim their humanity by asserting that the lives of black people do infact matter, racist opponents refuse to acknowledge the marginalization of an entire group of people by nature of their racial identity. Within a few minutes his arraignment of a human rights campaign started to extricate the lives of people unjustly lost to police and incarceration; of his suggestion that racism is a sin problem and not a skin problem, Huckabee revealed himself for what he truly is: racist.

Colorblindness is not a thing. Human beings are socialized to perceive the world in a certain way. (ex.Black people are supposed to be workers, women are supposed to be homemakers and avenues for the continuation of the human species). Whether this education primarily occurs from home, religion, mass media, or schools, all Americans grow up in a society that fixes people to certain spaces. White Americans, especially, are involuntarily taught that they are superior to people who do not look like them by nature of the biology and culture. Attempts to act like what has been taught can simply be untaught advocating for colorblindness is not only phony, but racially ignorant. This country was built for White people on the notion that the people who were native to this land the the people who were brought here to work it are naturally inferior. The systems that run this country favor those who are White and male. To act like White privilege is not real, to insist that people are not marginalized by their identities perpetuates White supremacy and institutionalized racism. Your desire to not want to see people’s ethnicity and culture does not make you innocent–it makes you an accomplice to white supremacy; it makes you racist.
Mike Huckabee is a prime example of what the deeply ingrained system of White supremacy tries to create: White people who advocate for ignoring the culture and heritage of ethnic groups while perpetuating a standard of white superiority. His tweet heavily pulls upon negative stereotypes about Asian people that were created to create the illusion of white biological and cultural superiority. His position of power (a politician and political commentator for Fox News) and privilege (an upperclass cis heterosexual Christian White male) allows him to perpetuate and bolster institutionalized racism and White supremacy.
