A tree dedicated to the unarmed black teen fatally shot by a Ferguson, Missouri, police officer last year was cut down just one day after it was planted.

Police said the small tree, which was purchased by the Chicago-based Black Caucus of the American Library and planted Saturday in Ferguson, was damaged by vandals, Time magazine reports. A plaque in Brown’s honor was also taken from the memorial Saturday or early Sunday morning.

Police told the St. Louis Dispatch that there are no witnesses or leads.

A second sapling, which a Ferguson resident bought to commemorate a dead pet, was also damaged, city officials told the Dispatch.

Two new trees were planted Monday, according to USA Today. Officials said the plaque will be replaced later this week.

A grand jury declined to indict the shooter, Darren Wilson, in the incident.
