With his charisma and his catch phrases, ESPN anchor Stuart Scott helped make “SportsCenter” as cool as the other side of the pillow. More than that, he inspired a generation of future sportscasters and athletes alike. The former wanted to emulate him, while the latter hoped to have him narrate their exploits. When Scott died on Sunday at age 49 after a battle with cancer, tributes came pouring in from fans, colleagues and athletes.

“ESPN and everyone in the sports world have lost a true friend and a uniquely inspirational figure in Stuart Scott,” ESPN president John Skipper said in a statement. “Who engages in mixed martial arts training in the midst of chemotherapy treatments? Who leaves a hospital procedure to return to the set? His energetic and unwavering devotion to his family and to his work while fighting the battle of his life left us in awe, and he leaves a void that can never be replaced.”

Shortly after announcing his passing on Sunday morning, ESPN showed its respect for Scott’s inimitable style and appreciation for his lasting legacy with a poignant video. The moving tribute included some of Scott’s signature exclamations and commentary by many of his admiring peers.

“He didn’t push the envelope, he bulldozed it,” former ESPN anchor Dan Patrick said.
