“Arne Duncan is one of my longest serving cabinet secretaries and he’s been a friend for a lot longer than that … I’ll be honest, I pushed Arne to stay,” Obama said at a press conference announcing Duncan’s departure Friday afternoon. “I couldn’t be prouder of him, and for good measure, Arne also holds the record for most points scored at an NBA all-star game. And he is my favorite partner in pick-up basketball.” ;

Duncan is not only one of Obama’s longest serving cabinet members, but he’s “the president’s closest friend in the Cabinet,” according to a recent Politico profile. The pair have known each other for years, dating back to when Obama was a state senator in Illinois and Duncan was running ;Chicago Public Schools. When Duncan leaves the White House, Obama may not only miss having a political confidant, but also a close pal and fierce basketball competitor. ;
