On Wednesday June 17th 2015, 21-year-old Dylann Roof went into a historic African American church and killed 8 members of the congregation along with the pastor of the church. This feels and seems like a throwback to the 1920’s. In a state where the confederate flag is raised right next to the United States flag it makes you think of times not so long ago, the 1860’s for example.
The African American church is one of the most welcoming places that exists on earth. No matter where you come from, people typically welcome you into their place of worship and you can truly make instant connections. From reports these church members let Mr. Roof into their place of worship and invited him to join bible study class. The class went on for about an hour.
Afterwards most already know the calamitous results. As someone with family in South Carolina and having been to Charleston many times, my heart is with this community.
As of this moment, Mr. Roof has been arrested and is currently in transport to South Carolina.
The questions that I want to leave everyone with are: Are we really in a post racial society? Is the Millennial Generation really the least racial generation?
Now after we confront this situation, we are forced to reevaluate ourselves and question what type of society this is. I hope that Mr. Roof gets his day in court and is found guilty of this crimes that he is charged with, if he is guilty. At this moment, there does not seem to be much question about his guilt. This case reminds everyone that there is nowhere that is sacred and safe for everyone at this point.
This church will rebuild its community and will become stronger than it has ever been before. The city of Charleston will moan and heal. And hopefully the confederate flag will be removed and taken down.
Unfortunately history typically repeats itself. Let’s take this opportunity from this situation to learn and grow from what happened.
If you have an associate or a friend that makes disparaging comments, make sure to let them know that these comments are not acceptable. Also in addiction to this, watch the people that you know saying these words and make sure that they are not just words. If you believe that they are serious about this, make sure if possible to help them receive help as soon as possible.
I am not a professional Psychologist and cannot offer mental health advice. However I can say that if I know someone that makes racist or sexist comments towards an individual, I need to say something right then and there.
We have had enough terror on our streets throughout the United States. This has to stop now.
Three weeks ago I was in Newtown, Connecticut and the one point I made to myself is that I thought that these mass killings were almost over. It turns out I was wrong.
