Police are searching for the person who gunned down a 15-year-old boy while he was waiting for a train at the Deanwood Metro station in Northeast Washington D.C. on Saturday, NBC Washington reports.
According to the report, authorities were called to the station at around 4:15 p.m. after shots rang out on Saturday afternoon. The boy, identified as Davonte Washington, was taken to the hospital, but was later pronounced dead.
The shooting occured in broad daylight in front of other people at the station. Davonte’s mother and two younger sisters were with him at the time of the shooting, relatives reportedly told the news station. The teen had been on his way to get a haircut for Easter.
Metropolitan Police Department district commander David Taylor told NBC Washington that Davonte got into a conversation that soon escalated into an argument. At some point during the spat, the person is believed to have pulled out a gun and fired at the teen.
Surveillance footage at the station captured the incident, D.C. council member Jack Evans told the news station.
Police have not made any arrests at the time, nor have they released any descriptions.
“It’s not believed to be random, that’s for sure,” Taylor said.
According to Fox 5 DC, however, Davonte’s family said the shooting was random, and a stranger came up to try and pick a fight with the teen, before shooting him for no reason.
The family felt that it was unlikely that the teen, a sophmore at Largo High School in Maryland and an ROTC, would have problems with anyone in Northeast D.C., where he was visiting his mother.
D.C. Police is reportedly offering a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone who provides information leading to an arrest.
