Texas Christian University quarterback Trevone Boykin was arrested and charged with a felony early Thursday morning allegedly hitting a bicycle patrol officer after a bar fight, according to ESPN.
Boykin was formally charged with a third-degree felony, posted a $5,000 bond and was released from custody late Thursday morning.
The quarterback and wide receiver Preston Miller were suspended for Saturday’s Alamo Bowl game against Oregon for a “violation of team rules,” TCU head football coach Gary Patterson said in a statement released Thursday morning.
“We are disappointed in their actions and apologize to the TCU Horned Frogs Nation, Valero Alamo Bowl and city of San Antonio,” read the statement.
ESPN reports that San Antonio Police chief William McManus confirmed reports that Boykin, 22, and some teammates were in a bar called Pat O’Brien’s just before 2 a.m. when some bar patrons began to “trash talk.”
Boykin reportedly became upset and a fight broke out. In the brawl, Boykin reportedly struck a bar employee, and, after the fight spilled onto the sidewalk, a San Antonio bicycle police officer, who with bouncers tried to break up the melee.
Police report that Boykin was “very aggressive and being held back by the group that he was with.”
Apparently Boykin broke away from his teammates and charged officers, one of whom he struck in the face. Chief McManus says that police do not know if Boykin was swinging for police or someone behind the officer, according to the report.
A manager at Pat O’Brien’s told ESPN that security footage has been turned over to police.
