BALTIMORE, Oct 14 (Reuters) – Youth protestors staged a sit-in at Baltimore’s City Hall on Wednesday after interrupting proceedings about whether to give Baltimore’s interim police commissioner Kevin Davis a permanent job as the city’s top cop.

The protestors, some of whom were identified as members of Baltimore City Bloc, a grass roots activist group of high school students, remained holed up in the building as of midnight Wednesday evening.

“The protest remains non-violent,” said T.J. Smith, a police spokesman. “Approximately 35 protesters are still in the balcony area of City Hall. No arrests have been made.”

;Earlier on Wednesday evening, the protestors were present at the council’s Appropriations committee hearing.

The body was considering a request by Mayor Stephanie Rawlings Blake to confirm Davis as the city’s top cop.

Davis replaced the previous commissioner Anthony Batts who was fired in July, the same day a police union report criticized the city and departmental leadership in the April rioting that followed the police custody death of Freddie Gray.

The 25-year-old black man died of a spinal injury after being arrested and transported in a police van. Six officers have been charged and face upcoming trials.

On Wednesday, the protestors chanted loudly, read a list of demands, and attempted to shout over council members who were casting their votes.

The body voted to confirm Davis amid the melee. The council must vote, possibly as early as Monday. The city’s Board of Estimates must also approve Davis’ contract.

Police are inside City Hall, though apparently the commissioner left after telling the protestors he was amenable to speaking with them at some point. The city’s police spokesman said they’re continuing to monitor the situation.
