Washington, D.C., police have arrested a 17-year-old suspect in the weekend shooting death of Davonte Washington, a 15-year-old who was shot in front of his mother and two younger sisters while waiting on the platform at the Deanwood Metro station in Northeast D.C., the Washington Post reports.
According to the Post, Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier announced Tuesday that the 17-year-old—whom a spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office in Washington identified as Maurice Bellamy—is expected to appear in court later today and will be charged as an adult with second-degree murder while armed. Police have not hinted at a possible motive for why the older teen approached Davonte, who was on his way to get a haircut for Easter, and shot him. Davonte, who attended Largo High School in Maryland, was in the District visiting his mother and sisters.
Lanier called the shooting “senseless in my opinion,” adding that “there was no reason for it. Absolutely no reason.” Lanier said that the suspect did not know Davonte.
Relatives have said that the shooter simply walked up to Davonte and exchanged a few words before shooting him in his chest. What exactly was said is still under investigation, according to the report.
According to the Post, the shooting, one of a number of other violent incidents in the Metro system, has raised concerns about transit safety, but the chief spokesman for Metro said Monday that the “crime rate on Metro is lower than in many of the communities we serve. … The crime that was committed at Deanwood was horrific and tragic for the community. There is nothing specific to Metro about it. It could have occurred across the street at the recreation center. It could have occurred on the sidewalk.”
