Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) put some perspective on Donald Trump’s racist statements about Latinos by asking what would have happened if he’d made the same comments about gays, blacks or women.

Speaking on the House floor Wednesday, Gutierrez said he was “calling out” NBC Universal on their decision to have Trump host “Saturday Night Live” in November. “When public figures cross certain lines, they should lose their privileges to host TV shows,” Gutierrez said, referencing remarks Trump made during his presidential candidacy announcement in June ;calling immigrants criminals and rapists:

“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best… They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people… They’re sending us not the right people. It’s coming from more than Mexico. It’s coming from all over South and Latin America, and it’s coming probably from the Middle East.”

Gutierrez questioned whether Trump would have been invited on “SNL” if he had said the same things about other groups.

“If Donald Trump had said gays and lesbians were murdering and raping Americans, would he get to host the show?” the congressman said. He asked similar questions about what would have happened if Trump’s disparaging comments had been about black people, women or Canadians. ;

Gutierrez even took a dig at the show’s viewership. “I am not calling for a boycott,“ he said. “That would go too far. Besides, like most Americans I stopped watching ‘SNL’ years ago.” He also pointed out the hypocrisy in the invitation, given that NBC cut ties with Trump in June over his racist comments.

The speech came just two days after Gutierrez sent a letter to the presidents of NBC Universal and Comcast, requesting that they rescind the invitation to Trump. The National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts and Margaret Cho have also condemned the announcement that Trump would be on the show.

NBC did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Huffington Post.
