Actress and writer Julie Delpy is raising eyebrows. She said Friday that Hollywood’s white, male dominated film industry is much kinder to black protesters than feminists—making her wish sometimes that she was black, the Wrap reports.

Speaking at the Sundance Film Festival, Delpy said she was “slashed to pieces by the media” two years ago for her comments about so few women being members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

“It’s funny—women can’t talk. I sometimes wish I were African American because people don’t bash them afterward,” Delpy said in a video interview to promote her new film “Weiner Dog.”

The Oscar-nominated writer said feminism is “hated” more than anything else. There’s “nothing worse than being a woman in this business. I really believe that,” she added.

Hollywood is in turmoil over the backlash for the academy’s failure for a second consecutive year to nominate any actors of color for an Oscar. The hashtag #OscarsSoWhite chronicles the widespread anger.

Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith said they will boycott the Academy Awards. And Spike Lee, who is slated to receive an honorary Oscar, also plans to sit out the ceremony.

In response to the backlash, the academy announced sweeping changes Friday that would make its membership more diverse.
