Eric Garner’s last words were captured on tape, echoed through chants and are now incorporated in a new song his family has released in his memory.

Garner’s daughter, Erica, and family member Stephen Flagg, teamed together to record a tribute song titled “This Ends Today,” which pays homage to their late relative and includes the last words he muttered before he passed: “I can’t breathe.”

Garner died on July 17 after a Staten Island police officer placed him in a prohibited chokehold. His death, and a grand jury’s decision not to indict the officer responsible for it, sparked a series of protests denouncing police brutality and emphasizing black lives matter.

“Life should be protected if justice is real, do you know how we feel?” read lyrics from the song. “The pain in our hearts, still refuses to heal, today some police be plotting to kill.”

Garner’s relatives led protests in recent months and have been vocal about his death and their efforts to bring about justice to his life and others who have died at the hands of police.

Last month, Erica led a protest in Staten Island and staged a “die-in” in the same spot where her father died.
