CLEVELAND (AP) — A rookie police officer who fatally shot a 12-year-old Cleveland boy carrying a pellet gun is being investigated by a law enforcement agency that passed on hiring him.

The Northeast Ohio Media Group ( http://bit.ly/1IpTXIr ) reports Timothy Loehmann applied to work as a deputy sheriff in September 2013 but wasn’t hired. The media group says a Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH’-guh) County spokesman confirmed those details but couldn’t immediately explain why Loehmann was rejected.

Cleveland officials announced last week that the sheriff’s office would take over the investigation into the Nov. 22 shooting of Tamir Rice. Surveillance video shows Loehmann shooting the boy within two seconds of the patrol car stopping nearby.

Tamir’s mother has said she doesn’t care who investigates the shooting as long as the officer is held accountable.
