Rita Chinyere, a comedian and queer person of color, is calling out a serious diversity problem she says she has witnessed at the Upright Citizens Brigade — a collective of comedians across the country who focus on sketch and improv comedy.

Chinyere, who recently wrote a piece titled “Why I’m Quitting UCB, and It’s Problem With Diversity,” explained to HuffPost Live’s Alyona Minkovski on Wednesday that while UCB has taken steps to make gender equality a priority, its overall diversity is “quite a critical problem,” especially for students of color.

“They don’t see that same representation,” she said, explaining that since she published her article, she’s had numerous people reach out to her echoing her sentiments.

“This is now an issue that’s on everybody’s mind,” Chinyere said. “So while my experience comes through the UCB, I definitely don’t want to limit it to strictly New York and the UCB. Obviously it’s a greater issue in entertainment in general.”

HuffPost Live has reached out to UCB for comment. This post will be updated upon their response.
