A terrified taxi driver got a lucky break when an unobservant armed man tried to rob him while a police car was right behind the cab, Fox 43 reports.

According to the report, Berks County, Pa., Deputy Sheriff Terry Ely became suspicious after noticing that the taxi did not move as the traffic light turned green multiple times.

The masked suspect, identified as 18-year-old Victor Martinez-Herrera, was recorded on a camera mounted inside the cab shouting, “Give me all your money, man! Give me everything you got!” while pointing what looked like a gun at the driver.

The driver, Ralph Valletta, handed over $11, telling Martinez-Herrera that he had only just begun his shift and did not have any money on him.

Ely eventually flashed his lights and headed to the taxi to see what was stalling the driver.

“When he approached the vehicle, he heard yelling,” Sheriff Eric J. Weaknecht said. “The deputy saw the defendant in the backseat with a handful of money; he couldn’t see the gun at first.”

When Martinez-Herrera did eventually spot the deputy, he reportedly yelled, “Fake gun” before raising up his hands and complying with Ely’s orders to get on the ground.

Martinez-Herrera is facing charges of robbery, terroristic threats and simple assault, Fox 43 notes, and is currently being held on $100,000 bail.
