Erykah Badu’s collaboration with ex-boyfriend André 3000 was an unexpected reunion for many fans when she released her November mixtape, “But You Caint Use My Phone.”

In a new interview with Billboard magazine, the OutKast member said the duet came to fruition after he and his son, Seven (who is the oldest of Badu’s three children), discovered The Isley Brothers’ 70s cover of Todd Rundgren’s “Hello, It’s Me” which also happened to go along with the telephone theme of Badu’s mixtape.

“Ron Isley repeats the phrase ‘hello, hello’ as if he was answering the phone. I told Erykah, ‘You should make this into a new song and get somebody to rap on it,’” he said. “She was like, ‘Well, you should rap on it!’ I’m happy it happened. It was a great reunion, because I don’t think people have heard a song from us in ages.”

Aside from their recent studio reunion, Badu joined the Grammy Award-winning rapper on stage in Atlanta during a 2014 OutKast concert to perform the group’s track “Humble Mumble.” As for his music career, André said that he’s currently recording new material and that he might release “some kind of music project” sometime in the future.

‘Dré is also busy adding to his growing list of acting credits with a starring role in the second season of the ABC drama, “American Crime.”
