Jay Nixon: More Than 2,200 National Guardsmen Available In Ferguson

0
FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon says more than 2,200 National Guardsmen will be in place in the region near Ferguson on Tuesday night in the event of more violence. He said Tuesday that hundreds more will be deployed to Ferguson, where fires and looting erupted Monday night after word that a grand jury decided not to indict a white police officer who fatally shot 18-year-old Michael Brown. The rest will be in a position to respond rapidly, if needed. Nixon says 700 guardsmen were in the area on Monday night, when more than a dozen buildings were set on fire and otherwise vandalized. Ferguson's mayor said earlier in the

The Pathology of the Magical Negro Narrative in Mike Brown Ruling

0
In a recent research study titled A Superhumanization Bias in Whites' Perceptions of Blacks by Adam Waytz, Kelly Marie Hoffman and Sophie Trawalter, researchers have found that Whites attribute supernatural, extrasensory, and magical mental and physical qualities to Black people. This cultural logic in the United States is a pathology that has plagued and permeated the psyche of White Americans since Africans were brought to this country. Today we are still trying to work against an American cultural logic that has been a historical fixture in our consciousness since the first African slaves were brought to the North American colony of Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619. Negating this logic seems like a futile attempt at restoring the perception of humanity for...

Two Unarmed Black Teenagers Shot Dead, Two Different Reactions From President Barack Obama

0
WASHINGTON (AP) — Two unarmed black teenagers shot dead. Two very different reactions from President Barack Obama. In contrast to the deeply personal response that Obama delivered last year after a Florida jury found Trayvon Martin's killer not guilty, America's first black president was more restrained in speaking after a Missouri grand jury declined to indict Michael Brown's shooter. The cases have many differences, most notably that the bullets that took Brown's life came from a policeman's gun after a confrontation on the street. Obama's call for calm Monday night was not heeded by the protesters in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson who torched buildings and police cars, smashed and looted storefront windows and fired gunshots. In a real-time display of...

A Change.org petition is demanding tighter restrictions on police conduct in order to protect citizens, and calling for harsher consequences when...

How Teachers Around The Country Plan To Talk To Their Students About Ferguson

0
St. Louis County prosecutor Robert McCulloch announced on Monday night that Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson would not be indicted for the killing of unarmed teenager Michael Brown. At the time of Brown's death in August, 18-year-old Brown had just graduated high school, and was only days away from starting college at a technical school. In the weeks following Brown's death, amid sometimes violent local protests, schools in Ferguson and the surrounding area were forced to cancel days of classes. This week, some school districts in the area have once again cancelled class to ensure the safety of students and staff in the aftermath of the grand jury announcement. Some districts also prepared for the grand jury's ...
