Photo Of Young Boy Hugging Officer At Ferguson Rally Goes Viral And Becomes ‘Icon...

0
As photos around the web show images of nationwide protests in reaction to the events in Ferguson, Missouri, one particular image has received widespread attention. Earlier this week, freelance photographer Johnny Nguyen captured a photo of 12-year-old Devonte Hart during a Ferguson-related rally in Portland, Oregon. Hart, an African-American boy, was holding a sign that read "Free Hugs," and the image Nguyen took shows Hart with tears streaming down his face while in a heartfelt hug with a white police officer. "It was an interesting juxtaposition that had to be captured. It fired me up," Nguyen told The Huffington Post on Sunday. "I started shooting and before I knew it, there were hugging it out. I ...

Killer Mike Speaks Out On Ferguson: ‘Justice Is Not Always Served’

0
After a video showing Killer Mike's powerful and impromptu speech about the grand jury decision to not indict Darren Wilson for killing 18-year-old Michael Brown went viral last week, the rap artist joined HuffPost Live to explain what prompted his passionate response. When the decision came down, Killer Mike said he fell into his wife’s arms in tears and El-P, the other half of the rap duo Run The Jewels, encouraged Killer Mike to share his feelings during their show in St. Louis. “I didn’t know what I was gonna say, I just got on stage and spoke ...

What Does ‘Black-On-Black Crime’ Have to Do With Ferguson?

0
The answer to the question posed in this post's title is nothing. Absolutely nothing. Not one thing. Nada. Zip. Zero. The "Black-on-Black crime" moniker is racist rhetoric functioning under the guise of concern for the state of Black America. People of all races -- Blacks included -- seemingly love to discuss how not killing our own and being more respectable will alleviate the effects of racism. It's dangerous, however, to tell Black people to dress better, work harder or be respectable because it diverts attention from the gaze of the oppressor to the behavior of the disenfranchised. It showcases how deep anti-blackness runs within our society. This highly misinformed line of thinking negates the complex historical implications...

Ferguson Mayor: Darren Wilson Will Not Receive A Severance Package

0
FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — Ferguson police Officer Darren Wilson did not receive any severance package when he resigned over the weekend, the St. Louis suburb's mayor said Sunday. Wilson, 28, won't receive any further pay or benefits, and he and the city have severed their ties, Mayor James Knowles told reporters a day after Wilson tendered his resignation, effective immediately. Wilson's lawyer, Neil Bruntrager, told The Associated Press that Wilson decided to step aside after police Chief Tom Jackson told him that people had threatened violence against the police department and its officers. "The information we had was that there would be actions targeting the ...

Two Florida Churches Merge With Hope Of Bridging A Racial Divide

0
Two Florida churches are soon expected to undergo a merger that pastors hope will help send a message on race relations throughout the state -- and beyond. On Jan. 4, 2015, Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church in Jacksonville -- a predominantly black church -- will take over Ridgewood Baptist Church in Orange Park. Ridgewood's congregation is mostly white. The latter has struggled financially and Shiloh Pastor H.B Charles Jr., who is black, along with Ridgewood Pastor Michael Clifford, who is white, decided that a union would be the best course of action. "None of this would have happened without the leadership of Michael. He's a good man," Charles told The Huffington Post in a phone interview. Charles, who serves as the lead pastor...

Giuliani: Unjustified Shootings Of Unarmed Blacks Have To Be Placed In ‘Proper Context’

0
WASHINGTON -- Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani said on Sunday that there is "no question" that unjustified shootings happen more often in black communities, but said those communities have the responsibility to prevent the need for more police officers in their neighborhoods in the first place. "There's no question that individual cases have situations that are unjustified, but you've got to put it in proper context," Giuliani said on "Fox News Sunday" when asked about a video showing an officer in Cleveland killing 12-year-old Tamir Rice as he was holding an Airsoft pellet gun. "Why is it happening? Why is it happening more often in the black community? And doesn't it actually logically make...

Powerful Photos Show The Evolution Of Michael Brown’s Memorial Site

0
The death of Michael Brown on Aug. 9th in Ferguson, Missouri immediately prompted a reaction from the community which evolved into a series of protests that lasted more than 100 days. A memorial site was created on the street where Brown was shot by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson. As people visited the site to mourn the loss of Brown and reflect on the events that led to his death, community members brought candles, posters, flowers and stuffed animals, along with various other items. In the three months since Brown's death, the memorial site has increasingly grown as more members of the community stop by and add items to the collection. The site has been captured in numerous ...

Darren Wilson Resigned Over Safety Concerns, Lawyer Says

0
(Updates with protests in Washington D.C., St. Louis) By Daniel Wallis and Edward McAllister FERGUSON, Mo., Nov 30 (Reuters) - The white police officer who shot and killed an unarmed black teenager in Ferguson, Missouri, this summer, got no severance deal when he resigned from the force, the mayor of the St. Louis suburb said on Sunday. The officer, Darren Wilson, announced his resignation late Saturday, saying he feared for his own safety and that of his fellow police officers after a grand jury decided not to indict him in the fatal Aug. 9 shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown. "There will be no severance or extension of benefits ...

Antonio French: Darren Wilson Seemed ‘Remorseless’ Over Michael Brown Killing

0
WASHINGTON -- Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson seemed "remorseless" and "cold" in his grand jury testimony about killing 18-year-old Michael Brown, St. Louis Alderman Antonio French said Sunday. In an interview with Martha Raddatz on “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” on ABC News, French said a lot of Wilson's answers "sounded like they were prepared by a lawyer" and that he did not sound as if he was sorry that Brown died. "What I worry is that as we said back in August, that the way this trial, this grand jury process was being carried out ... by the county prosecutor, that it really does not give what the community needs in order to move forward," French ...

People With Felonies, Criminal Records and Gang Affiliation Are Our Friends and Family

Every single bit of positive change that comes from President Obama's executive order on immigration is a testament to directly affected grassroots organizers who have been creative and relentless. The activism of radical "undocumented and unafraid" people, particularly civil disobedience and direct actions including taking over Obama for America offices and infiltrating detention centers, and the courage of the "Bring them Home" and "Not One More" campaigns are major interventions that embarrassed the administration -- the first efforts pushing President Obama to first grant DACA and now temporary relief to an estimated 3.7 million "deserving" people, potentially. At the same time, after years of risky activism, the parents ...
