Telfar is getting real.
Famous for its one-of-a-kind “Bushwick Birkin” shopping bags and cult-like following, the iconic Black-owned brand is moving away from vegan leather in favor of genuine leather for its latest drop.
Telfar’s “The Carry” shopping bag has entered the chat.
This new bag retains similar features and the silhouette as Telfar’s signature tote but with a major upgrade: full-grain pebble leather. It’s a bold move for the celebrity-favorite brand, keeping Telfar’s iconic style intact while offering something fresh for long-time fans and newcomers alike.

True to form, Telfar used its haters as its motivators with its new “The Carry” promo video. Social media content shows it leaning into years of criticism to highlight the exciting change.
Floating heads ask in the content, “What kind of d*mn bag is that? What’s with these cheap a** bags? They aren’t even made of real leather!”
It’s classic Telfar – playful, self-aware, and unbothered.
Although Telfar Clemens, who founded the brand in 2005, has experimented with different fabrics, collabs, and designs, this is the first time we’re seeing a full-leather bag solo from his line. Before this, the Quilted Large Shopper with Mooseknuckles, priced at $650, was the only other full-leather option.
According to news sources, the new leather shopping bag will drop exclusively at Telfar’s concept shop in Selfridges London on September 30. The bag starts at $400 for the small size and goes up to $960 for the large.
But you’ll have to keep waiting if you’ve been hoping for added hardware like zippers or extra snaps for more security. The Fashionista reports that the new design stays minimal, with studded feet and an interior key ring.
Alongside the leather tote, Telfar is also launching a capsule collection of leather apparel, including chic maxi skirts and a full-length trench coat. Wilson Leathers partnered with Telfar on the new luxe leather pieces.

Why Telfar’s Move to Genuine Leather Is a Big Deal
Since the news dropped, the fashion world has had plenty to say. This shift marks a new era for Telfar and offers something fresh for its die-hard fans while expanding its appeal. We are here for it!
The brand’s totes – offered in various colors and matching apparel – have held their own for years. But this new leather offering could be a moment. Will the change bring new life into the brand?
For some fashion fans, introducing genuine leather feels like a big win. While vegan leather was a selling point for sustainability-conscious shoppers, others thought it didn’t have the lasting power they wanted. (The price point for essentially fake fabric was also a negative sticking point.)
On the other hand, genuine leather is known for its durability. Therefore, Telfar’s new line promises investment pieces, longevity in fashion and timeless accessories all wrapped in an “it girl” moment.
Some fans aren’t happy, however. Fans have pointed out that the switch to leather might go against Telfar’s ethos, which has long championed affordability and sustainability. As one commenter put it on Twitter/X, “Releasing a genuine leather bag defeats the whole purpose of their brand.”
This move also speaks to the power of Black designers like Telfar to continuously shift conversations within the fashion industry and make heads turn.
Telfar has always played by its own rules and created its own standards. This new offering demonstrates how Black designers can start new trends, challenge norms, and surprise naysayers time and again.
Telfar isn’t just switching up materials by introducing genuine leather – its ushering in a new era and changing the game.
