DENVER (AP) — A man has been arrested in a small explosion last month near the offices of the Colorado Springs chapter of the NAACP, a law enforcement official said Friday.
Thaddeus Murphy is in custody and is due to appear in federal court later in the day, according to the official, who spoke to The Associated Press only on condition anonymity because the information has not been publicly released.
No one was hurt in the explosion adjacent to a wall of Mr. G’s Hair Design Studios, a barber shop.
The FBI investigated the blast as a possible hate crime. However, it wasn’t immediately clear what Murphy would be charged with or whether authorities believe he was targeting the NAACP office.
The office is in a building that houses other businesses, and the explosion happened on the opposite side of it. The blast caused only minor damage but rattled nerves due to its proximity to the nation’s oldest civil rights organization.
The crude device failed to ignite a canister of gasoline placed next to it. However, the FBI said at the time that even if the canister had ignited, it probably would have caused only minor damage.
No one answered the phone Friday at the NAACP offices.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Thomas Ravenelle said in January there were no threats to the NAACP in the weeks before the explosion.
