A Pennsylvania man is accused of killing his girlfriend and setting a motel on fire by tossing gasoline on the victim, who was smoking, WPVI reports.
Kevin Smalls, 46, is charged with criminal homicide, arson and other offenses in the death of Melissa Bacon-Smith, also 46. Smalls was denied bail during his Sunday-afternoon arraignment.
According to the report, when reporters asked Smalls what he did, the Philadelphia native responded, “I lost it … bad things. I hurt someone I love.”
The incident reportedly occurred at the Lincoln Motel in Bucks County, Pa., on Sunday at about 2:30 a.m. as the result of a domestic dispute.
“I don’t know what sparked it. He claimed she laughed at him earlier in the night, but that’s his side of the story,” Bensalem, Pa., Police Dept. Lt. Robert Bugsch said.
Smalls is believed to have bought a cup of gasoline from a Wawa store across the street, returned to the motel and doused Bacon-Smith with the fluid while she was smoking, and then left.
“We believe she reached out to him and yelled his name, and he left her in there to die,” Bugsch said. Smalls was later found not far away with burns on his hands.
Smalls reportedly called his mother after he left the scene and told her that he threw the gasoline in the victim’s face and that Bacon-Smith “looked like Freddy Kreuger.”
Firefighters who arrived had the blaze under control by 3 a.m. At least three people had to be rescued from rooms on the second floor. Multiple people were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, but authorities said that their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
