At the time of his announcement, then-Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) had already announced her presidential bid and was seen as the front-runner for the Democratic nomination, according to numerous national polls.
Obama went on to win the 2008 Democratic nomination on June 3, 2008, and was elected president of the United States that November. Obama won his re-election race against former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in November 2012.
