While chatting about Lady Gaga’s “Sound of Music” tribute at Sunday’s Academy Awards, Kristi Capel of Cleveland’s “Fox 8 News In The Morning” tried to pay the singer a compliment, but used a racial slur in the process.

Capel said she couldn’t truly appreciate the pop performer when she sings her own songs: “It’s hard to really hear her voice with all the jigaboo music,” she told colleague Wayne Dawson, before repeating the word again.

Capel tweeted an apology claiming ignorance of the term’s meaning after one viewer called her out. She replied with the same message to other complaints.

The disparaging word has been used to insult black people since the early 1900s.

Fox 8 news director Andy Fishman told the New York Daily News that Capel had no excuse for using the word, even if she didn’t know what it meant.

“We have spoken with her and are confident nothing like this will happen again,” Fishman said, adding that Capel apologized on air.

The Huffington Post reached out to Fishman for more details but didn’t immediately hear back.
