A Georgia doctor has been arrested after 36 of his patients died, a third of them from confirmed prescription medication overdoses, reports WSB-TV Channel 2.
Nearly 40 DEA agents raided the office of psychiatrist Narendra Nagareddy on Thursday in Jonesboro, Ga. Nagareddy is accused of violating Georgia’s Controlled Substance Act with his “pill mill” in Clayton County.
Nagareddy’s license was issued in 1999 and the doctor has apparently racked up complaints dating back several years regarding his heavy-handed prescription methods, reports the New York Daily News.
Legal documents obtained by the station confirm that “Former and current patients have admitted to obtaining controlled substance prescriptions from Dr. Nagareddy without having a legitimate medical need.”
“He’s a psychiatrist in Jonesboro who has been overprescribing opiates and benzodiazepine and the last several years has had a multitude of overdoses and overdose deaths,” Clayton County Police Chief Mike Register said to WSB-TV. “If the allegations are true, he is Dr. Death, no doubt about it.”
In addition to criminal charges, the district attorney’s office also filed a RICO civil action to seize Nagareddy’s assets.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, prescription drug abuse has reached epidemic proportions in this country.
Although the United States makes up only 5 percent of the world’s population, it consumes 75 percent of the world’s prescription drugs. The top three drugs for abuse are painkillers, tranquillizers and stimulants.
