While Rodman mistakenly referred to Jenner using male pronouns in an interview with TMZ Sports on Monday, his heart seemed to be in the right place. He applauded a “new generation” more sensitive to LGBT issues.
“I’m so proud of the fact that people are not really coming down hard on him where he can’t walk around and show his face,” he said of Jenner. “That’s the most important thing.”
“Life has its evil way of screwing with people, but now since people are so open today, man, you know what bro, knock yourself out brother.” (Progress has been made, but a 2012 study indicated that 63 percent of transgender respondents experienced “serious acts of discrimination,” such as physical assault, eviction and job loss.)
Rodman, who in 1995 posed for a then-controversial Sports illustrated cover in women’s clothes, is credited in the TMZ clip for expanding tolerance in general.
While that might be a stretch, the brief interview is still worth a listen.
