New York City Police officer Daniel Pantaleo released a statement on Wednesday in response to a grand jury’s decision not to indict him in the death of Eric Garner.

The Staten Island cop was involved in the chokehold death of Eric Garner, a police custody killing that was caught on camera in July.

“I became a police officer to help people and to protect those who can’t protect themselves. It is never my intention to harm anyone and I feel very bad about the death of Mr. Garner. My family and I include him and his family in our prayers and I hope that they will accept my personal condolences for their loss.”

This grand jury decision comes just over a week after a Missouri grand jury decided against the indictment of officer Darren Wilson for the fatal shooting of unarmed teen Michael Brown. The decision sparked demonstrations across America in remembrance of Brown, Garner and other black men who have died at the hands of police.
