The video parodies the latest Disney-Pixar film Inside Out and includes the show’s host and popular vlogger Franchesca Ramsey aka ChescaLeigh.
In the video, Ramsey’s character orders an ice coffee, but is ignored by the barista in what appears to be a racial microaggression.
The incident triggers five emotions — shade, paranoia, weariness, fury, and hope. Her emotions are acted out by Sholanty Taylor, Kid Fury, Crissle and Grace Edwards, and they comically debate whether or not the barista is actually racist.
Sholanty Taylor, who portrays “hope,” initially tries to stay optimistic: “Maybe he is just a little a busy,” Taylor said.
Moments later, Kid Fury, who portrays “fury,” bursts out in a heated rage: “This guy is officially the most racist barista in America — it’s cause we’re black!”
At the end of the video, the barista’s confederate flag tattoo is revealed. Confirmed! He’s racist!
The parody is hilarious, but also shows the complex reactions people of color have when encountering discrimination. Ramsey’s character reminds us all to remain hopeful in those difficult situations, but we have to echo her sentiment of: “F*ck that guy!”
Ramsey has done several other videos with MTV News Decoded and her personal youtube channel that focus on race. The topics range from dating outside your race to white privilege.
