Well before Whoopi Goldberg won an Oscar for her portrayal of a psychic in the film “Ghost,” she had an admittedly spooky real-life job working in a funeral home.
“I did hair and makeup on dead people,” she tells “Oprah’s Master Class” in the above video. “There was an ad in the paper! And I’m a licensed beautician as well, because I went to beauty school.”
Even though she answered the ad and accepted the job, Whoopi says that working in a funeral home can be tough, and it certainly isn’t for everyone. “It’s a rough gig,” she says. “You have to be a certain kind of person. And you have to love people in order to make them worthy of a great send-off.”
Whoopi’s boss, she adds, was that kind of person. Plus, he had a sense of humor, which once led him to pull quite a memorable prank on his newest employee. It began with him calling Whoopi downstairs in the funeral home for a quick meeting.
“In the old days, they used to have these big, thick doors — wooden doors,” Whoopi says. “[It was] kind of chilly in the room, and [it] had these drawers. So, I go in, and he’s not in there.”
As she waited for her boss to arrive, Whoopi heard a strange sound, almost like a constant creaking or scratching. She started feeling a little spooked.
“My brain is saying, ‘Hey, that’s not a sound we should be hearing right now,'” she says. “As I start to look around, I see that one of the drawers is moving — and it’s moving out, it’s opening.”
Whoopi laughs about it now, but back then, her instinct was to hightail it out of that room.
“As my brain puts together the fact that the drawer is opening — we don’t see anybody pulling the drawer open — at the same time, I’m getting up to run. It’s all coming together at the same time,” she says. “The drawer is really opening, and this thing happens where I see this: [My boss sits up and says,] ‘Hello there.'”
That did it. Too spooked to realized she was being tricked, Whoopi bolted.
“I run, boom, into the door,” she says. “Knocked myself out.”
When she came to, Whoopi had earned a small lump on her head and a very important lesson, which her boss laid out as soon as she woke.
“He said, ‘Now, the worst thing that you could imagine has happened. That’s it. That’s the worst thing that can happen. It’s already happened… You still want to work?'” Whoopi says.
She did, and adds that she no longer felt nervous or jumpy when she worked in the funeral home alone after that point.
“It was the greatest,” Whoopi says. “Once he did that, I was fine.”
