Comedian and talk show host Sheryl Underwood removed her wig and revealed her natural hair on Monday’s segment of “The Talk.”

The host said she cut she cut her “relaxed” hair last year around the same time she caught backlash for saying Heidi Klum’s biracial son’s hair was “nappy,” which resulted in some people calling her an Uncle Tom, coon and a hypocrite, among other names. But on Monday’s episode, Underwood said she took off her wig not only to reveal her afro, but also to apologize to the black community.

“I think if you hide behind something, you are a coward and I wanted to show that I was strong enough to take the truth about what people were saying and… say that I am so sorry to my community and my people for hurting you and I’m asking you for forgiveness,” Underwood said.

Underwood said she was going to leave her wig off for the rest of the segment, and she’s learned from the comments she made last year because her role in the black community goes far beyond just being a comedian and the host of a show.

“There’s a responsibility to being on TV, and there’s a cultural responsibility,” she said. “There’s no need for me to do something that causes more damage to us, and that’s why I wanted this to be my reveal.”
