In a HuffPost Live interview Friday, a group of Ferguson activists said they still have one voice they want to hear amid the protests: those of black cops.
Tory Russell, co-found of Hands Up United, said that at a time when the public may be more at odds with police than ever before, there has been little criticism of police from the police force itself.
“I was really waiting on a couple of black officers to say that they have kids and their kid could’ve been killed like Mike Brown or Tamir Rice,” Russell told host Alyona Minkovski. “That’s a struggle I have, even in conversations. I went to school with people that are now police officers in the city and the county. Privately, they say that, but as I protest, I see their faces and it just doesn’t register.
“It seems like when they put on their badge, they clock out from being black and they clock in to being blue,” he continued. “We just need a platform for them to even come out.”
In one of few public statements from black officers, the Ethical Society of Police of St. Louis praised Rams players for their “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot” gesture before last Sunday’s game. Originally, the St. Louis police as a whole came out with a sharp criticisms of the players.
