The TV host recently purchased a home in Maryland that could use some work. So, Oprah orchestrates a surprise that sends Iyanla into hot flashes. With cameras rolling inside her home, Iyanla thinks she’s recording a holiday greeting for OWN. That is, until a producer passes the unsuspecting homeowner a phone call from Oprah.
“This is what I know for sure,” Oprah tells Iyanla. “Your home should be your sanctuary, and I’m telling you, your home should be the thing that rises up to meet you.”
Iyanla realizes what’s happening. She buries her head in her hand and begins to cry, as Oprah continues.
“I called Nate [Berkus],” Oprah says. “Hello, we’re going to fix your house! So, Merry Christmas! That’s my Christmas present to you.”
On Saturday, the major home makeover airs on OWN, with Nate’s room-by-room design plan, some much-needed demolition and, of course, a jaw-dropping final reveal. Before any part of the project even begins, Iyanla — who lost her daughter, house and fortune years ago and never thought she would be able to pick up the pieces — is overcome with emotion.
“Oh, my God. I can’t breathe; I think I’m having a heart attack or something,” Iyanla jokes, sitting down on her stairs while still holding the phone. “Really, I’m hot!”
“It’s just a hot flash,” Oprah tells her.
“I’m past that stage,” Iyanla says with a laugh, before quickly recovering. “When’s Nate coming!?”
“Nate’s on the way!” Oprah says.
“I love you, thank you so much,” Iyanla says.
