Obama has made no secret of his fondness for ;hip-hop ;– he even recorded with former A Tribe Called Quest artist Q-Tip. So while his choice isn’t necessarily surprising, it’s certainly bold, since hip-hop music — especially rap — is frequently subversive and critical of government, and hasn’t been celebrated by many presidents. ;Several ;rap ;songs have even scathingly criticized presidents like Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush.

First lady Michelle Obama, who has announced plans to release a hip-hop album to promote a healthier America, told People that “Uptown Funk,” by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars, was her favorite song of the year.

The White House may never be this hip again.
