Macklemore’s introspective new song “White Privilege II” was released to mixed reactions last week, drawing a response from activist DeRay McKesson and sparking a heated debate between Talib Kweli and Iggy Azaela, who was specifically referenced in the song’s biting lyrics.
Jermaine Dupri sat down with HuffPost Live’s Alyona Minkovski on Monday and added his voice to the growing chatter.
The producer, who’s been busy developing new talent on his television show “The Rap Game,” said he respected Macklemore’s authenticity on the politically-charged issue. In the song, the Seattle rapper called out Iggy Azalea and Miley Cyrus for appropriation, tackled white supremacy and asked himself whether he has been complicit in it all. Dupri appreciated the frank and unwavering perspective. He said:
He’s a real emcee. And we, as a hip-hop community, we support real emcees. If we saw you before you had real success and if we know that you been out here trying to put out this message prior to you getting successful — which he has, he’s been talking the same way prior to people knowing him and being the success that he is — then that’s all he should pay attention to.
Dupri said the song’s bold message surprised him at first, but he acknowledged that Macklemore is contributing to an important and essential conversation about race.
“When I saw it, I was like, ‘Woah! Okay, what is this about?'” he said. “But at the same time, he is telling the truth. I mean, he’s putting a message out here that we have to deal with as a society.”
