Zimmerman, 31, is charged with aggravated assault for allegedly hurling a bottle of wine at his girlfriend in Lake Mary, Florida. Don West, Zimmerman’s lawyer, said he would not “speculate” on the circumstances of the alleged assault, but did note that Zimmerman “has not been lucky with the ladies,” according to NBC.

The 31-year-old’s purported bad luck includes a slew of domestic violence allegations over the last decade. In 2005, he and his ex-fiancee Veronica Zuazo filed for restraining orders against each other, each accusing the other of violence. In September of 2013, his then-wife, Shellie Zimmerman, claimed that Zimmerman threatened her family with a gun, though she ended up not pressing charges, and a police spokesman said officers found no evidence he ever had a gun. In December of that year, his then-girlfriend, Samantha Scheibe, told officials that Zimmerman pointed a shotgun at her face and smashed her coffee table, but she later recanted some of her accusations and declined to pursue the case.
In his response to the Friday incident, West also noted that “anyone who has been through what [Zimmerman] has would have a rough time.” West was presumably referring, at least in part, to Zimmerman’s trial and subsequent acquittal for fatally shooting unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin in 2013.
