Amy Inita Joyner-Francis didn’t believe in fighting. She was a quiet teen, who managed her high school’s wrestling team and was focused on her studies.
Nik Stryminski, remembered an incident where Amy, 16, stopped an argument between himself and another student that was headed toward violence.
“She wasn’t worried about herself. She was worried about me not fighting,” he told Delaware Online. “She didn’t believe in fighting, and the craziest thing is she died in a fight.”
On Thursday, Amy died after several students inside a Howard High School bathroom attacked her. According to reports, Amy went to the bathroom around 8:15 a.m. and began fighting one student when several others attacked her. Police were called to the school and medics performed CPR on Amy before she was airlifted to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead, ABC 7 Chicago.
Police are investigating the incident that they believe may have been over a boy. They are also trying to determine if the altercation was recorded on cellphone so that they can retrieve the footage.
ABC 7 reports that no arrests have been made but several students were interviewed about the incident.
“I’m so upset that the young lady lost her life today. Things like this shouldn’t happen,” Delaware Mayor Dennis Williams said during a news conference. “My heart bleeds for the family, the kids that go to this school, administrators and our city.”
