One night in a hotel may not sound like much, but for this small family, it was a lifesaver. ;

Cpl. Che’ Atkinson, of Maryland’s Prince County Police Department, came to the aid of a homeless woman and her baby ;after learning the two had been displaced and hadn’t eaten in days, WUSA reported. Atkinson used his own money to house the family in a hotel room for the night, and provide them with food and drinks.

“I told [the woman] … I’m going to find you a place … I’m going to put you up for the night,” Atkinson said to the news outlet.

The mother and young child came to the department’s District I station, in Hyattsville, on Wednesday, with several bags and nowhere to go. After learning the woman had experienced domestic violence, Atkinson contacted one of her distant family members to pick her up, but when he came into work the next day, the woman was still at the station, the department explained on its Facebook page.

So the officer took it upon himself to get the stranded family into comfort and safety. ;

“He found a child car seat and put it in his cruiser in order to safely transport the little girl to the hotel,” the Facebook post reads.

After sharing Atkinson’s act on Facebook, the post has been liked more than 16,000 times and shared over 4,000 times, as of Wednesday. Comments include messages commending the corporal and sending prayers to the mother and child. To Atkinson, the choice was simple.

“I had the extra money,” Atkinson told WUSA. “What would it hurt just to put them up for a night to make sure they’re safe?”
