A black couple are upset after realizing that the receipt they were given at an Austin, Texas, IHOP had the words “BLACK PPL” written at the top of it, Fox 7 reports.

Even more surprising to them, they say, is the fact that their waiter was also black.

“People being racist—and it’s your own people being racist toward you for no reason,” Rolman Sparkman, who visited the restaurant with his girlfriend, Arainia Brown, said.

Brown, who has experience working in restaurants, added that race should never be used to identify customers.

“We either put a number, a to-go, the color of their shirt. Not their skin color,” she said.

“This was a poor choice made by our franchisee’s team member, and is not in keeping with policies and procedures. We recognize that it could be offensive and sincerely apologize. Everyone is welcome in our restaurants and our franchisee is using this as a teachable moment for the entire team so that it will not reoccur,” IHOP said in a statement, according to Fox 7.

The waiter in question, Dwayne Williams, apologized on Facebook, saying that it was a slipup in order to get orders out.
