Two Modesto, Calif. teens were arrested on Monday after allegedly threatening a black classmate via a video sent through the social media app Snapchat, police confirmed, the Washington Post reports.
According to the report, the 12-second-video shows a white teen holding a noose around his neck and threatening the black student by name.
“You must die,” the white teen says in the video, before the snap cuts to the video of a gun being fired.
The students were classmates at Central Catholic High in Modesto, police said.
According to the Post, police got involved last week after the victim’s mother alerted them. The investigation led to two 16-year-olds, who were arrested for their part in allegedly producing or distributing the video. Both teens were charged with making terroristic threats, criminal conspiracy and commiting a hate crime.
An attorney representing the victim said the video left a significant mark on the student.
“He understands the historic significance of the noose and the terror it has caused people throughout history,” attorney Jacq Wilson said.
“I know that a noose around someone’s neck is nothing to joke about,” the victim sadi via a statement. “I heard my name in the video. The death threat made me afraid because I was singled out. I felt threatened and angry.”
